Broad-spectrum antibiotic, binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 1A located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall and inactivating PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity.
