Overview
Key functionality & mechanism
H55 is described as a potent and selective allosteric inhibitor of the fungal enzyme Erg6 (C-24 sterol methyltransferase), which is specific to fungi (in particular Candida albicans).
By inhibiting Erg6, H55 causes accumulation of sterol intermediates such as zymosterol and farnesol in the fungus. ChemicalBook+1
As a result, it inhibits hyphal formation of Candida albicans (hyphae are the filamentous growth form important in virulence).
In animal (mouse) infection models of C. albicans, use of H55 reduced severity of infection and improved survival.
Physical & experimental properties
The molecular formula is C₍26₎H₍21₎BrN₄OS.
Molecular weight: ~517.44.
Form: powder, white-to-beige. ChemicalBook+1
Solubility: ~2 mg/mL in DMSO (warmed) to give a clear solution.
Storage conditions: 2–8 °C. ChemicalBook
Potential uses
Research tool in fungal biology: because it selectively inhibits a fungus-specific enzyme, H55 can be used to study sterol metabolism in fungi, fungal virulence mechanisms (e.g., hyphal formation), and host-pathogen interactions.
Potential antifungal therapeutic lead: the fact that it reduces infection severity in mouse models suggests it might have development potential (though I did not find data indicating it is in clinical use).
Limitations & considerations
Because it targets a fungal enzyme (Erg6) not present in humans (or not in the same form), off-target toxicity might be less than many broad-spectrum inhibitors—but detailed toxicity/safety data are not widely available in the sources I saw.
As with many research-grade inhibitors, solubility, bioavailability, dosing, and specificity in vivo are important practical constraints.
It is meant for research purpose (bioactive small molecule inhibitor) rather than established therapeutic use.
