Overview
Cell Details
The endothelial cell layer is a natural barrier to blood and other tissues. Endothelial cell dysfunction is the leading cause of atherosclerosis. Endothelocytes simultaneously synthesize and secrete enhancers and inhibitors of coagulation and fibrinolytic systems, as well as vehicles that affect platelet adhesion and aggregation. They also secrete proteins that control cell proliferation to maintain the health of the blood vessel wall. Human endothelial cells secrete anti-thrombotic factors such as t-PA and PAI-1 as well as TNF-α, which in turn secretes the cytokine GM-CSF, which expresses ICAM-1 surface antibodies, producing large amounts of nitric oxide and endothelin. Endothelial cell damage and functional destruction caused by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) may be an important cause of postoperative arterial restenosis.
